Leftover Halloween Candy? Make Halloween Candy Bark

I was really worried that our trick or treat numbers would be down this year due to the rain so I was making plans to use my leftover Halloween candy. However, I don't seem to have much of a drop-off and have far less candy left than I thought I would. I was surprised that my daughter lasted for almost 90 minutes in the rain. If the weather's nice next year, I think I'll need more candy.

Last night when I was deciding what sweet treat to bring to my daughter's class Halloween party, I stumbled on a few suggestions for Halloween Candy Bark. I was inspired and offered it to my daughter this morning and she loved the idea.

I prepared the pan by lining a cookie sheet with my Silpat Baking Mat. You could also use parchment paper, wax paper, or aluminum foil.

My first step was to chop up the Halloween candy. I started with two fun-size bars of each of our chocolates: Hershey bar, Twix, Kit-Kat, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, and Snickers. Plus I had two packs of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, M&Ms, and Whoppers. After chopping each up, I spread the candy on my cookie sheet to determine if I had enough chocolate. I decided I wanted more chocolate, so I added two more of each type. I then transferred the chopped chocolate to a bowl. Be sure to mix the chopped pieces up so that you end up with a variety on your bark instead of concentrations of a particular type of chocolate.
Not Quite Enough - Time to cut more
Rather than use chocolate chips that would need shortening added, I used Wilton Candy Melts as the base for my bark. One of the recipes recommended using dark chocolate since you are adding more sweet with the mostly milk chocolate candies. I used a combination for my base - 1/3 of a bag of light cocoa melts and a full bag of dark cocoa melts. I melted the chocolate melts in a double boiler although you could also melt them in the microwave according to the directions on the package.

Ready to be Refrigerated
When the chocolate was smooth, I spread it on the cookie sheet being careful not to hit the edges. Then I sprinkled the chopped chocolate bars on top. I placed it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to allow it to solidify. Once the chocolate had hardened, I removed it from the baking mat and broke it into chunks.
Finished Product
I found the M&Ms add some nice color (I used a Halloween color pack). My daughter asked about adding StarBurst, but I suggested sticking with chocolate varieties. The beauty of this is that you could add whatever you had. I have a feeling it might be a good way to get rid of some less popular choices like Baby Ruth that would be fine in smaller quantities and add a crunch to the bark.

The chocolate bark was a big hit at my daughter's class party. Unfortunately I had to ration it after a mishap on the way into school. I was juggling a bag of games, a witch's hat, my water bottle, my phone, my keys, and the container of bark. The container of bark was the ball that got dropped, with the lid popping open and half of it spilling on the sidewalk. I was lucky that half of it stayed in the container and I was safely able to serve it. I had nothing to put the spilled bark in, so I pushed it off to the side and collected it into the empty container on our way back to the car after the class party.

I am definitely remembering this recipe for next year, or maybe for my daughter's rejects this year (I only have about 10 pieces left).

You can find an Outback near you with their locations directory.

Holiday Outfit Shopping - 30% off at Gymboree

Halloween may still be a few days off, but holiday deals continue to pile up fast. One item I try to purchase early is my daughter's Christmas outfits since stores can sell out in popular sizes. I usually try to have at least one holiday outfit ready to go for Thanksgiving weekend when we celebrate Christmas with family and friends that we don't see again in December.

Disclaimer: I am a Gymboree Affiliate and am compensated for sales through Gymboree links. I appreciate your support of my blog by shopping through my links.
Gymboree is currently offering 30% off of everything in the store. Since the holiday lines are new merchandise and not yet on sale, this is a great time to find your desired holiday outfit.

I loved Gymboree from the time my daughter was 1 through last year. From the time she was 3 until age 6 her wardrobe was probably 75% Gymboree. Now, I feel that she has outgrown many of their styles. I love their holiday line because they offer such a variety of outfits. We tend to have a more causal Christmas and the formal dresses aren't a good style for her.

The Gem Flower Pleated Dress is one that she could still wear today. Unfortunately they don't have it available in a size larger than a 9.

When she was a few years younger, I would have selected Fair Isle Sweater Dress or the Gem Cable Sweater Dress from their Girls size range.

In the Baby Girl size range, I like their version of the Faux Fur Collar Fair Isle Sweater Dress and Fair Isle Sweater Dress.

Beyond the Christmas dress, I usually buy my daughter a few other holiday themed shirts and skirts or pants to go with them. This year, my pick is the Gem Glitter Reindeer Tee paired with the Gem Jean Skort.

Since I only have a girl (and two nieces), I have never given a lot of thought to boy's clothes. Gymboree does offer options from button shirts and sweaters to a few long sleeve t-shirts. I would probably opt for the Fair Isle Pullover Sweater and the Elf Food Pyramid Tee or Rockin' Xmas Santa Tee for casual looks.

Discounted BOOritos at Chipotle

It's Back! Chipotle is offering $3 BOOritos on Halloween.

From 4p to closing head to Chipotle in costume and receive a boorito - or bowl, salad, or tacos for just $3. Even better than the $3 boorito is that 100% of proceeds benefit Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.

Last year, my daughter and I had our booritos for dinner on Halloween after school before Trick or Treat. She opted for the kids make your own taco plate. My "costume" consisted of a witch's hat with a black skirt and purple turtleneck.
The booritos were $2 last year, but $3 is still a great deal.

LEGO Star Wars Deals - Jabba the Hutt fans - Plus ships!

This morning my husband was browsing Amazon's LEGO selection and found several great deals on LEGO Star Wars Sets. My daughter (and my husband) love both LEGO and Star Wars so he is always keeping his eye out for discounts. He was saying that Toys R Us is offering a 20% discount in store, but that isn't always a great deal because their regular price is higher than the standard list price on many sets. Amazon's list prices typically match the LEGO catalog price and it is rare to see a list price lower than the catalog.
Disclaimer: I am an Amazon Associate and am compensated for sales through Amazon links. I appreciate your support of my blog by shopping through my links. Amazon prices can and do change frequently, so be sure to verify the prices before purchase.
One set my husband and daughter have been eyeing up is Jabba's Palace which retails for $119.99. Amazon has it marked down to $89.81. That is a great discount for LEGO.

Two other Jabba the Hutt themed LEGOs are also on big discounts to go along with it. Rancor Pit 75005 is $45.60 marked down from $59.99.

Jabbas Sail Barge is avialable for $95.99 marked down from $119.99. Not as big of a discount but still a decent discount.

My husband is also considering the  Tie Fighter  which is $40.97 down from $59.99. He has previously bought her the X-Wing Starfighter  which is $43.70 down from $59.99.

Happy LEGO Star Wars Shopping!
