Coming Attractions: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

This morning my daughter informed me that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is coming soon. She had seen a trailer when she went to see The Croods at a friend's birthday party this weekend.

I wanted to share the trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2:

My daughter has seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs a few times. We initially saw it at one of our local movie theaters which offers free or discounted re-runs of children's movies. Then, in 2010 she picked the movie out for our anniversary as a Family Movie Night movie. She enjoyed it much more the second time around. She then watched the movie a few more times in the next months. She was only 3.5 at that time, and has not watched the movie in recent years. I am surprised that she remembers the movie that well.

If you have not yet seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it is available from Amazon on DVD for $4.99 and in a Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack for $13.49.

New LEGO: Legends of Chima Episode on Wednesday

Do you have a LEGO Chima fan?

If so, you will want to tune in to Cartoon Network on Wednesday, March 27 at 7p. There will be three 30 minute episodes airing that night. The first two episodes: Legend of Chima and The Great Story were originally released in January. The third episode airing at 8p is The Warrior Within.

The first two episodes of LEGO: Legends of Chima are available for download through Amazon Instant Video or iTunes.

There are a number of LEGO Chima Books including chapter books and comic readers (some are coming in the next few months).

LEGO Friends Books and "Movie"

My daughter loves LEGO and was thrilled last year when they introduced the LEGO Friends set which are geared towards girls. She has a number of these sets (as well as plenty of LEGO City, Creator, Star Wars, Marvel Super Heroes, Harry Potter, and Dino sets.

Yesterday my daughter received LEGO Friends: New Girl in Town, a chapter book that says it is based on a movie. My daughter loves the LEGO Star Wars movies, but I had not heard of a LEGO Friends movie. I went in search of the LEGO Friends movies and found a series of LEGO Friends of Heartlake City videos on YouTube. There are 10 episodes which combine to tell the story of New Girl in Town.

LEGO Friends of Heartlake City is available on DisneyShows YouTube channel, or you can find a LEGO Friends of Heartlake City playlist on my YouTube Channel. There are currently 10 episodes of LEGO Friends of Heartlake City. The episodes range from 1.5 minutes to 3 minutes long for a total play time of approximately 23 minutes. I wish the episodes were condensed into one or maybe two episodes since they are so short.

I love having the videos on YouTube since they are FREE! My daughter can watch the shows with the YouTube app on her iPod Touch or we can stream them through our AppleTV or our televisions. They are at sufficient resolution to play on my 46" 1080p HDTV.

Here's the first episode to get you started:

There is a new chapter book, LEGO Friends: Lights, Camera, Girl Power!, that was released on March 1, so I am hopeful that they will release more episodes.

If your daughter is not quite ready for chapter books, there are also LEGO Friends readers at level 3 (Friends Forever and Summer Adventures) and 4 (Welcome to Heartlake City). They are also launching a comic series this summer with the first two volumes slated for August (A Puppy Tale) and September (Andrea Takes the Stage).

My daughter also enjoys playing the LEGO Friends games on the LEGO website or LEGO® FRIENDS Dress Up Game on her iPod Touch or our iPad.

Bring Your Baby Matinees

Have you been wondering how you are going to be able to see movies now that you have a baby?

AMC Theatres is helping out with Bring Your Baby Matinees on the first Tuesday of every month.
First Tuesday of Every Month at Noon*
Crying babies? Breastfeeding? Stroller parking? All of the above is allowed at these special showings for parents like you. See the movies you want to see in a baby-friendly zone. That means the lights are brighter, the volume is lowered, and poopy diapers are not frowned upon. Plus, you can feel good about having some fun! Part of your ticket purchase will go to the Will Rogers Institute, a nonprofit that provides much-needed equipment to neonatal intensive care units and promotes research, treatment and education on cardio-pulmonary diseases.

The April Bring Your Baby movie will be The Host.

SYNOPSIS:
What if everything you love was taken from you in the blink of an eye? "The Host" is the next epic love story from the creator of the "Twilight Saga," worldwide bestselling author, Stephenie Meyer.  When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about — Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt) , proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.

THE HOST hits theaters nationwide March 29th, 2013!

I grew up with AMC Theatres through my high school and college movie going years and they were our preferred theater. Unfortunately, there is not an AMC Theater near me now. When my daughter was an infant, our local theater offered a program like this weekly and I was able to attend a number of sessions. It was a great way for me to get out of the house with her. Since my husband sometimes has flexibility in his job, he was able to join us a couple of times so we did not need a babysitter. I found my daughter was content at the baby movies until she was about 10 months when she wanted to be too active.

LEGO Friends Building Event

Toys R Us will be having a LEGO Friends Building Event on Saturday, March 23 from noon-2p.

My daughter loves LEGOs, and the Friends sets are one of her favorites. At the event, each girl will be able to build a wishing well and take it home with them. I recommend arriving early as LEGO events are popular and they sometimes run out of materials.

We attended a LEGO Friends event last February at our local Toys R Us and it was nice to see all the girls building.

Thomas Playdate at Toys R Us

Toys R Us will be holding a Thomas Playdate on Saturday, March 16 from 11a-1p.

During the Thomas Playdate, they typically will have story time, games, and activities. We have attended a variety of events at our local Toys R Us. We have found that it can be helpful to arrive early in the event to make sure they have enough materials available.

Movie Review: Oz: The Great and Powerful

Yesterday I took my daughter (age 7) to see the newly released Oz: The Great and Powerful. We saw the film in 3D. I really enjoyed the movie. My daughter thought that some parts were a little scary. Still, she enjoyed the film and was glad that she had seen it.

From the official studio boilerplate:
Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.
“Oz The Great and Powerful” is produced by Joe Roth, with screen story by Mitchell Kapner and screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Grant Curtis, Palak Patel, Josh Donen and Philip Steuer are serving as executive producers. “Oz The Great and Powerful” opens in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2013.
Despite having seen many trailers, my daughter did not realize that this was a backstory for Wizard of Oz. After the movie when she commented that some parts were a little scary, I mentioned that she should have known that Oz and Glinda were ok because they were in the subsequent movies. I was a little surprised that she was scared as she has watched many movies at home that I consider to have more suspenseful moments (Harry Potter 1-3, Star Wars (IV-VI), Jurassic Park, Avengers, and Thor). The difference between the big screen and watching a DVD may have contributed to the intensity of the movie.

I liked the movie, but did find some parts a little slow. I enjoyed learning a backstory for how the Wizard of Oz became the man behind the curtain with his image displayed above. I also liked the continuity with the Wizard of Oz...the sleeping poppy fields, the horses of a different color (briefly visible in a field), and the concept of people from Kansas appearing as the hero's traveling companion in the movie. Glinda (Michelle Williams) was Annie in Kansas, Finley (Zach Braff) was Frank, and China Girl (Joey King) was a spectator at Oz's magic show.

Now that I have seen Oz: The Great and Powerful, I would like to go re-watch Wizard of Oz. However, since the films are only connected through their relationship to the L. Frank Baum works, this is not a true prequel so there will be some inconsistencies between the two worlds.

We saw a 3D showing and I thought it was worth the additional charge. I had no issues with the 3D and liked how it was used in some of the scenes.

Based on my daughter's opinions, I would recommend the movie for children ages 6 and above depending on their tolerance for suspense.

March Building Workshop at Home Depot

Home Depot holds a Kids Workshop from 9a-noon on the first Saturday of the month at all of their stores. The Kids Workshop is FREE and includes their craft, a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin, and a certificate of achievement.

The March Workshop will be a Build a Race Car on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The workshops are designed for kids ages 5-12.

We have not yet attended a Home Depot Kids Workshop, but we attended a Lowe's Workshop in the spring and my daughter really enjoyed it.

Upcoming Build & Grow Workshops at Lowe's

This spring, Lowe's Build & Grow Projects will feature Monster Jam® vehicles and the upcoming movie The Croods. The Build and Grow Sessions are held at most Lowe's stores at 10a on Saturday mornings.

On Saturday, March 9, kids can build Monster Mutt®.

On Saturday, March 23 kids can build Piranhakeet Chomper from The Croods.

The Croods theme will continue for April 13 with a Planter from the movie.

The next Build and Grow Clinic will not be until May 11 with a Sweetheart frame.

I took my daughter to a Lowe's Build and Grow event last spring and she really enjoyed it. I do recommend signing up now if you are interested as the session do tend to fill-up quickly (at least at my local store).

March Kids Events at Michaels Stores

Michaels stores routinely offers events for kids at their stores. They offer both Kids Club events that cost $2/child for each 30 minute session and FREE Family Events. In March, they have 4 events listed.

Their first event is NEA's Read Across America on Saturday, March 2 from 10-11:30a. There will be 30 minute sessions starting every half-hour. They don't list details of the event but I would assume it would include a story and Dr Seuss themed craft. The event costs $2.
On Saturday, March 9 they will kick off their Easter themed events with Paper Easter Baskets. They will start a session every 30 minutes from 10-11:30a. Sessions cost $2/child. These Paper Easter Baskets look very easy to assemble. I found a similar craft to make lanterns before my daughter's 2012 Rapunzel themed birthday party and used them for the kids to make lanterns. Last Halloween, we used orange paper to create jack-o-lanterns in my daughter's class.
On Saturday, March 16 they will have the FREE Family Craft Time with a Crayola Model Magic Duck from 1-3p. Families will be able to create their own duck to take home and keep or give as an Easter gift.
The final March event is Saturday, March 23 with the Kids Club Easter Egg Mosaic by Perler Beads. The event costs $2/child and there will be sessions every 30 minutes from 10-11:30a.

These events look like a lot of fun! So be sure to mark your calendars
