Goodbye Molly & Emily

Today, American Girl announced that they will be retiring their Historical Doll Molly and her friend Emily. No date has been set for the retirement, but I expect that items in the catalog will start to sell out and not be back in stock.

My daughter is disappointed since she LOVES Molly - she saved the money to buy Molly herself and was even Molly for Halloween.

She has put Molly's Ice Skating Outfit & Accessories on her Christmas list since it is the only outfit she does not have for the dolls.

Personally, I am not surprised that Molly was the next doll to be retired as she was the last of the original 3 dolls. The only thing that surprised me about the timing was that Molly had a new bed and PJs introduced this spring. When they introduced those new items, I figured Molly had at least another year left.

American Girl has added new historical dolls each of the last two years (Marie-Grace & Cecile in fall 2011 and Caroline in fall 2012), so I understand that they need to retire some in order to release new historical dolls. The other retired dolls (Samantha, Felicity, and Kirsten) live on in the books, the American Girl website, and mini-dolls. I expect that Molly will receive the same treatment. I am glad that they continue to introduce new dolls and expose girls to different eras of American life.

In reading the comments on American Girls' Facebook announcement, one jumped out at me. It was that the poster's daughter had a father deployed in Afghanistan and identified with Molly since Molly's dad was in England fighting World War II (I'm sorry, I can't seem to link to a specific comment).

Disney's Frozen: First Look & Teaser Trailer

Disclaimer: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures provided me with the information in this post. All opinions are 100% mine.
For awhile now I have been hearing that Frozen is the next big Disney animated movie opening at Thanksgiving.

Disney has released the following teaser trailer:

The official boilerplate tells more of the story:
Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom. The film is directed by Chris Buck (“Tarzan,” “Surf’s Up”) and Jennifer Lee (screenwriter, “Wreck-It Ralph”), and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Winnie the Pooh,” “The Princess and the Frog”). Featuring music from Tony® winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit”), “Frozen” is in theaters in 3D on November 27, 2013. For more information, check out Disney.com/Frozen, like us on Facebook: facebook.com/DisneyFrozen and follow us on Twitter: Twitter.com/DisneyAnimation.

They have also released the following "first look still frames"

Disney Planes Character Posters

Disclaimer: I was provided the images and boilerplate by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. I have not been compensated for sharing this information.
Disney's Planes is releasing to theaters on August 9. Disney has released several character-focused posters in advance of the movie's release.

The movie features Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook), Rochelle (voice by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Ripslinger (voiced by Roger Craig Smith), and Bravo and Echo (voiced by Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards).

The official movie boilerplate:
“Disney’s Planes” is an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar. “Disney’s Planes” takes off in theaters on Aug. 9, 2013. LEGO Movie Trailer Released

The LEGO Movie is a full-length computer animate film schedule for release in theaters on February 7, 2014. The first teaser trailer was released today.

The movie tells the tale of Emmett (voice by Chris Pratt) who is identified as the the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world despite being a rather ordinary mini-figure. The trailer shows mini-figures from different eras and themes such as DC Super Heroes (Batman, Wonder Woman), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Michelangelo), and the 2002 Basketball Dream Team. My daughter loves the LEGO Star Wars movies, so I am sure we will be lining up to see this movie. I am hopeful that licensing issues don't keep the Marvel and Star Wars mini-figures out of the movie.

Nat Geo Kids Almanac 2014

Are you looking for a book to keep your child reading and even learning about science this summer? I highly recommend the Nat Geo Kids Almanac 2014.
Disclaimer: I am an Amazon Associate and am compensated for sales through Amazon links. I appreciate your support of my blog by shopping through my links
My daughter's class loves the Nat Geo Kids magazines that are in the classroom. Yesterday, my daughter saw National Geographic Kids Almanac 2014 in the store. She picked it up and started reading it and would not put it down. We bought it for her and she read it on the way home. Then, last night she tried to stump me with one of the Stump Your Parents quizzes. She was quite disappointed that I got 3 of the 6 right.  There are several Stump Your Parents pages available throughout the entire book.

National Geographic Kids definitely has a fun way to reach out to young elementary students. National Geographic Kids Almanac 2013 is also available.

LEGO Brick City Book - End of School or Father's Day Gift

Disclaimer: I am an Amazon Associate and am compensated for sales through Amazon links. I appreciate your support of my blog by shopping through my links.

Today I found the book Brick City: Global Icons to Make from LEGO while out shopping. I immediately put the book in my cart for my daughter to give dad for Father's Day. They both love LEGOs and building them together. I hope the book inspires her to build more form her imagination and less from the pre-purchased sets.

The book gives instructions on how to build various icons from a NY City Taxi Cab to the Empire State Building to the White House and even a Parisian coffee machine. The models with directions range from the size of a mini set (the LEGO White House or US Capitol building are made with just a few pieces on a miniature scale) to a model that is over a foot tall like the Empire State Building.

The LEGO Architecture sets are some of my daughter's favorites (she only has the small sets), so I know she will love working on these sets with Dad.

The book would make a great end of school gift to keep your child occupied over the summer or, as in our case, would be a great gift from a child to a Dad who loves to build LEGO with them.

Britax Ride Free Event

Disclaimer: I am an Amazon Associate and am compensated for sales through Amazon links. I appreciate your support of my blog by shopping through my links. Amazon prices can and do change frequently any prices or additional sales beyond the promotion are correct at the time this post was written.

I have always heard good things about Britax car seats although we have never owned one. Amazon currently has two Britax promotions running.

The Britax Ride Free Event on Amazon runs through June 30, 2013. If you purchase a Britax B-Ready Stroller, you will receive a FREE infant seat, second seat (for the stroller), or infant bassinet. The strollers have a list price of $499, but most colors are discounted by $100-125. With the free infant seats having a list price of $179.99, and the bassinet and second seat having a list price of $149.99, this represents a huge savings on the combination.

They are also promoting Shop Amazon Baby - New Booster Seats from Britax. Britax Boosters offer harnessed protection in a booster seat with a shoulder height of 20.5" for children weighing up to 90 lbs and convert to a belt-positioning booster for children up to 120 lbs.

LEGO Mini Model Build for June

LEGO Fisherman June Monthly Mini Model Build
from LEGO.com
Each month LEGO Stores offer a FREE Mini Model Build on the first Tuesday of the month beginning at 5p and continuing while supplies last. The event is for children ages 6-14 only. There is one free model per child.

June's Monthly Mini Model Build is a LEGO Fisherman.

Since our "local" LEGO store is over an hour away (without commuter time traffic). we have never been to one of the monthly model builds.  If our store was close, we would definitely attend some of them. We were at Walt Disney World the first Tuesday of April and I did consider visiting the LEGO Store at Downtown Disney for the model build, but decided to stay in the parks.

Summer Vacation to Chicago? Check out these deals!

Are you considering a family vacation to Chicago this summer? A few years ago my husband attended a conference in Chicago and my daughter and I met him in Chicago after the conference to vacation for a few days.

Chicago is about 4 hours from our home and is also easily accessible via Amtrak. We took Amtrak to get there so we would not have to worry about parking our car in the city.

There are lots of fun activities in Chicago. We enjoyed visiting the museums, the LEGO Store, and the parks/lake shore.

If you are considering a trip to Chicago, I wanted to share a few Groupon deals that would be great for tourists:

There are frequently Groupon Getaways or LivingSocial Escape deals for Chicago, but there are currently none available.  We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Chicago and overall would recommend the hotel.
