Rise of the Guardians Lowe's Build & Grow Projects

Lowe's typically runs FREE Build and Grow workshops for kids twice a month. The events are FREE and include the craft, an apron to take home, a workshop patch, safety goggles, and a completion certificate. There are a limited number of slots per store, so be sure to pre-register as soon as you can.

I brought my daughter to a Build and Grow workshop this spring and she really enjoyed it. My only complaint with the workshop is that they are very popular at the Lowe's closest to my home because they always seem to fill up very quickly.

On Saturday, November 17 and Saturday, December 1 they will feature crafts from the upcoming Dreamworks movie Rise of the Guardians.

The craft on Saturday, November 17 will feature North's Sleigh. The December 1 craft will features Sandman's Plane. I recommend registering as soon as possible to reserve your slot.

In the meantime, learn more about the movie with the trailer below:

The December Workshop will be a picture frame craft on Saturday, December 1, 2012.

We have not yet attended a Home Depot Kids Workshop, but we attended a Lowe's Workshop in the spring and my daughter really enjoyed it.

Make a Yarn Frame

On Saturday, November 17, Michaels stores will have a Passport to Imagination Yarn Event from 1-3p. The event requires the purchase of a frame. In my experience with events at Michaels, the ones that require a purchase tend to be better crafts. The purchase is usually in the $1-3 range.

Make sure to download the Michaels app for your iPhone or Android to make sure you have coupons ready for your visit. I love not having to clip coupons.

LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition Exhibit

In the spring of 2011 our family visited Washington, D.C. I had lived in the area for 3 years growing up and my husband and I had lived there from 2000-2003. We were excited to take our daughter to see D.C. and to revisit some of the museums. In the course of planning our trip, I read about the LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition exhibit at the National Building Museum. With my family being huge LEGO fans, we knew this was a must-do event and worked it into our schedule.

Several of the buildings that are included in the exhibit were in Chicago where we had visited the previous summer, so my daughter was excited to see models of buildings that she recognized. We had timed admission tickets as they were only letting a certain number of guests in at a time. There were 15 models in total, several of which are available as LEGO Architecture sets. The models included several conceptual skyscrapers that were not actually built. The room had a lot of natural light, which unfortunately made it difficult to take pictures of some of the displays. I had been expecting more models than there were in the display. I was also a bit disappointed that the exhibit was designed to go through once and then finish. My 5 year old wen through at a quicker pace than we would have preferred. We would have liked the opportunity to return to the models as she was building (one stay with her, the other go to the models and then change places).

The exhibit also included a LEGO building area where kids (and adults) could build structures and then add them to a city mat. My daughter and husband enjoyed building their creation and seeing the other creations that were there.

The day that we attended, a master architect was building a scale model of the White House. It was definitely interesting to see the level of detail that went into the model. We could see the progress between when we entered the exhibit and when we left.

The LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition Tour closed at the National Building Museum on September 2, 2012. It has moved to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI where it opened on November 3, 2012 and will remain until February 24, 2013.

Admission to the National Building Museum was free, but admission to the event cost $8/adults and $5/child. I did feel that the admission price was steep for the size of the exhibit. We were also not that impressed with the National Building Museum other than this exhibit. However, we were glad that we went.

At the Henry Ford Museum, admission to LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition is included with your museum membership. As members of the Henry Ford Museum, we plan to visit the exhibit at least once, perhaps the afternoon that we attend Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village. Based on previous experiences with exhibits at the Henry Ford, I believe their exhibit space is larger than the National Building Museum, so hopefully you will be able to wander between models and building areas.

* I know it is now the Willis Tower. But I grew up in Chicago with my Dad working at the Sears Tower. It will always be the Sears Tower to me.

Make Your Own Holiday Ornament

On Sunday, November 11 kids ages 3 and up can make their own Holiday Ornament for FREE at Michaels stores across the country.

Passport to Imagination: Holiday Ornament runs from 1-3p. We attended the reindeer ornament making in 2010 and had a little difficulty with making the ornament. I hope they have improved the process in the last two years.

Wreck-It Ralph Review & Activities

Walt Disney Animation Studios' newest film Wreck-It Ralph opens in theaters on Friday, November 2.

Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is one of the stars of the arcade game Fix-It Felix Jr. Unfortunately for Ralph he is the bad guy in the game and excluded form the game's 30th Anniversary party. Ralph decides to rebel and game jump in order to earn a gold medal like Felix to gain acceptance. After ending up in Hero's Duty (like Call of Duty), he ends up escaping the aliens and crash lands in Sugar Rush...a candy-themed racing game. In Sugar Rush, His medal is taken by Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman) and they must work together for her to win the race and earn back his medal.

My daughter and I both loved the movie. My daughter's favorite part was when Ralph and Vanellope build her new car and practice racing it. I loved seeing the arcade characters I grew up with: Qbert, PacMan Ghosts, Street Fighter characters, etc. there was even an appearance by Turbo which reminded me of the early racing game Night Racer that we had on our Atari.

The movie is preceded by the animated short Paperman. It is a black and white silent animated film that tells the story of a young man trying to send a love letter to a young woman through paper airplanes. My daughter loved Paperman. Since there was no dialog I had to keep reminding her that we were in a theater and she couldn't narrate the move.

We saw a 3D version of Wreck-It Ralph which I thought was very well done. Lately I have not been impressed with 3D versions, but thought this one was well done.

We both loved the movie and are recommending it. I feel like both parents and kids will enjoy the movie. Enjoy the following preview:

The last scene in this trailer was one of my daughter's favorite scenes.

You can find several Wreck-It Ralph activity sheets that you can print for your child to do. There is a Connect the Dots, a Cord Maze, Pencil Toppers, Coloring Page, Ralph Color by Number, and Vanellope Color by Number.

There are also three apps available for your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Fix-It Felix Jr, Wreck-It Ralph, and the Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe. I have downloaded Fix-It Felix, Jr (which is free) and my daughter enjoys playing it. (Just make sure to turn the volume off it is highly annoying)
