Free Comic Day Was a Success

This week was the first time that I heard of Free Comic Day, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect when we visited a comic book shop today.

We had three participating shops in our area. Since we were coming from the LEGO Star Wars build at Toys R Us, we selected one of the shops closer to there. I thought the store we visited had a great method for distributing the free comics.

When we arrived, there was a table towards the back with numbered display issues and paper to write the number of the comic that you wanted. You then took your number to the counter where they gave you the title you requested.

The comics were special issues for Free Comic Day and were labeled as such. They had a wide variety of comics. My daughter initially selected Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. from the upcoming Disney XD cartoon, but switched to Star Wars. I selected the Hulk comic as mine so that she could have it as well.

There were probably 20 comics to select from. I am guessing that they started with 45-50 titles since the numbers went over 44 and they gave out the display copy of one of the titles which had run out while we were there. We did not arrive until after 1p - 3 hours after the shop opened - so I thought it was a very reasonable selection.

Titles ranged from obvious kid-oriented titles like Strawberry Shortcake to more teen/adult oriented comics. Other titles included Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Archie.

We will definitely be keeping an eye out for Free Comic Day next year.
